Our guest presenter was Terri Reifsteck, the VP of marketing from Visit Champaign County (Champaign County’s tourism division).
She shared with us how Visit Champaign County markets the area attractions. They advertise through traditional advertising, trade shows, visitor’s guide (70,000 printed!), as well as their website which is actually being redesigned right now! They seek to bring conventions, meetings, motor coaches, travel writers and sports groups to the C-U area. They also help people get grants to events.
How can Homer improve with the help of Visit Champaign County?
- We can submit our events to their calendar, and request that they use social media to promote it. Christmas in Homer, Krazee Daze, and our 4th of July celebration are all good events to ask them to promote.
- Create 5-10,000 rack cards that promote Homer. Visit Champaign County will distribute them at the mall, their office, and at tradeshows.
- Create a “tour package” for Homer. By grouping together a few attractions, and creating a flyer for these, they will promote the tour package to the local travel agencies! For example: Visit Historical Society, shop at Ms Becky’s, pick up lunch at Belly Deli, eat lunch at Homer Lake.
- Sign up for interstate and directional signage for Homer.
